Charlie Chaplin’s Granddaughter Oona Chaplin Stars in ‘Avatar: The Fire and Ash’

Director James Cameron’s highly anticipated movie, Avatar: The Fire and Ash, will introduce new tribes and characters — including a standout performance from actress Oona Chaplin, the granddaughter of Hollywood legend Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin plays Baran, the fierce leader of the Ash Tribe (Mangkwan), who brings both intensity and mystery to the film’s expanding universe.

Cameron has high praise for Chaplin’s portrayal, calling her performance “absolutely captivating,” highlighting her physical presence and emotional depth. Baran, who views fire as sacred, leads her people through a bleak volcanic land after a devastating eruption. Her tribe holds a deep grudge against Eywa, the spiritual force of Pandora, for a perceived betrayal.

Why it matters

In addition to the Ash Tribe, the film also introduces the Tilalim, a nomadic sky-faring tribe that rides massive airborne creatures known as Medusoids. British actor David Thewlis, known for playing Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter series, joins the cast as Pailak, the calm and wise leader of the Tilalim. These new storylines are set to expand the emotional and visual scope of the Avatar universe.

Avatar: The Fire and Ash is the third installment in the record-breaking franchise and will follow the Sully family as they confront new threats following the death of their eldest son Neteyam. The film premieres globally on December 17, starting with South Korea.
