To mark Korea’s Patriots and Veterans Day on November 17, Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University released a new multilingual video about Korean independence activist Kim Hyang-hwa. Sponsored by actress Song Hye-kyo, the four-minute video features both Korean and English narration and has been shared globally via YouTube and various social media platforms.
Kim Hyang-hwa, a notable female freedom fighter, led a group of fellow gisaeng (female entertainers) in a bold public protest during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The video highlights their 1919 demonstration at Hwaseong Haenggung, where they waved the Taegukgi (Korean national flag) and shouted for independence. The film also points out how their courage inspired similar movements by gisaeng across the country.
Why it matters
Professor Seo emphasized the importance of spotlighting lesser-known female independence figures. He shared that this is the fifth video in a series he has created with Song Hye-kyo, following those on Jeong Jeong-hwa, Yun Hui-sun, Kim Maria, and Park Cha-jeong. The duo plans to continue raising global awareness about Korea’s female independence heroes through more multilingual video projects. Over the past 14 years, they have also donated Korean-language guidebooks and signs to 39 independence movement sites around the world.
