Streamer Yapyap Apologizes After Apartment Fire Caused by Indoor Smoking

Popular Korean streamer Yapyap (real name Kim Seong-tae, 34) has issued a public apology following a fire that broke out in his apartment due to indoor smoking. The fire occurred on November 20 during a live stream, when viewers noticed smoke and Yapyap abruptly left the broadcast. Shortly after, the stream was cut off due to a power outage caused by the fire, which started in the bathroom of his home in Busan.

Firefighters reported that the blaze was likely caused by a lit cigarette, with the scene showing large amounts of cigarette butts and trash strewn throughout the bathroom. Fortunately, a sprinkler system activated automatically, containing the flames before they spread. The estimated damage was around 3.3 square meters and approximately ₩2.98 million (about $2,200 USD) in property loss.

Background

Following backlash over a seemingly lighthearted first statement, Yapyap posted a second apology acknowledging the seriousness of the incident. He admitted full responsibility and announced his decision to quit smoking and take a break from all scheduled content. This includes withdrawing from upcoming events like the Sonic Racing competition and the Chzzzik Cup. Fans and commenters expressed concern not only about the fire but also about his living conditions, which some saw as signs of mental exhaustion or burnout. Supporters are encouraging him to rest and prioritize his health during this time.
